Restoration of the Stockade Relics

A major role of the Land Manager has been the restoration and maintenance of the various historical structures that are under our care.  The funding for these projects has come largely from the Crown Lands.

The powder magazine was restored in 1975, but unfortunately is not sympathetic to the original structure which features an arched entry.  The interior is in original condition.

A major task undertaken by the original trustees was the restoration of five culverts on the remaining section of the Great South Road.  The culverts had not been maintained for many years and had deteriorated significantly.

Restoration was done in two stages by local stonemason, Brian Doyle.

Stage 1 – Culverts 4, 5 and 6 located at the Southern end of the reserve were done in 1989.

Stage 2 – Culverts 1 and 2 was done in 1998.

Since 1999…..

Culvert 1 for reasons unknown was built differently to the other culverts in so far as at least half of the ceiling length is timber as compared to the other culverts which have fully arched stone ceilings. On inspection it was found that the timbers were rotting and required replacement. To do this the overburden had to be removed and new timbers inserted.  The project was undertaken in 2017 with substantial funding from Holcim and replacement timber supplied by Roads & Maritime Services.  Particular care was taken that when the over burden was replaced so that the soil was in the same strata as before the excavated.
